From Greenbelt to the University of North Carolina, Ajier’s Story.

In the heart of Jonglei State in South Sudan, a remarkable individual emerged from the corridors of Greenbelt Academy, transcending boundaries to become an inspiring alumna of Education Bridge. Ajier Margaret Magot Awan's story is one of resilience, leadership, and a commitment to transforming lives.

Ajier's journey began in Jonglei State, where the seeds of her passion for education and empowerment were planted. Her life took a transformative turn when she was granted a scholarship by Education Bridge, paving the way for her to explore new horizons and pursue higher education. As a female graduate of Greenbelt Academy, Ajier fondly reflects on the impact Education Bridge had on her life and that of her parents.

Margaret Magot Awan went from Greenbelt to becoming a Morehead Cain Scholar at the University of North Carolina, USA.

"Being given a scholarship by EB gave me opportunities that I never had before. I have siblings, and it is great that my parents do not have to pay school fees anymore," she expresses with gratitude.

Her experience at Greenbelt Academy laid the foundation for her leadership journey. "I served as the head girl of the school. Anything concerning girls, I was responsible for it. I was also a chairperson of the debate club and served as one of the best volleyball players in the school. I was involved in many clubs in school," she recounts, illustrating her multifaceted involvement in school life.

Education Bridge played a pivotal role in shaping Ajier's vision for the future. The organization not only provided her with a scholarship but also instilled in her the values of leadership and service. In 2018, she assumed the role of head girl at the academy, addressing critical issues within the campus, particularly focusing on housing and the lack of resources for girls.

"Education Bridge helped me get a clear vision of my future as an individual. It allowed me to become a leader and take care of others," Ajier reflects on the impact of the organization on her personal and professional development.

Her journey took a global turn in 2019 when she was selected as a Yale Young Global Scholar. This experience marked her first venture outside of South Sudan, exposing her to Applied Physics and honing her scientific skills. Inspired by this newfound knowledge, she sought further growth and was subsequently accepted into the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa.

At the academy, Ajier not only excelled academically but also emerged as a leader in various capacities. Serving as the volleyball captain, she showcased her athletic prowess, while as a member of Agrinnovation, a student enterprise, she contributed to growing tomatoes, spinach, spring onions, and chili peppers for the campus. Additionally, she dedicated her efforts to developing "The Light of Hope," a project aimed at transforming the lives of street children in her home country.

Passionate about women's empowerment, Ajier is currently pursuing a degree in health policy and management at UNC, aspiring to shape policies in the South Sudan health system. Her strong commitment to making a difference in her community was evident when she returned to South Sudan during the summer of 2021 to implement a writing program created by Notre Dame students.

As an alumna of Education Bridge, Ajier remains connected to her roots and the organization that played a crucial role in her journey. The strong alumni communication provided by Education Bridge has facilitated ongoing support and collaboration, allowing Ajier to continue making a positive impact in her community and beyond.

Ajier Margaret Magot Awan's story is a testament to the transformative power of education and the ripple effect it can have on individuals, families, and communities. Through her leadership, passion, and commitment, Ajier is not just a product of Education Bridge but a beacon of hope and inspiration for the generations that will follow in her footsteps.
